Fibromyalgia Symptoms
There are many disorders and illnesses that continue to baffle medical professionals despite leaps and bounds in research and technology. Fibromyalgia is one of those disorders, and the debate still continues when it comes to fibromyalgia symptoms and its causes. Pain is definitely something that no one wants to experience, regardless of its strength and frequency. The aforementioned debates on fibromyalgia (also known as fibrositis, FM and FMS) don't affect its accepted basic definition: this disorder involves pain throughout a person's musculoskeletal system (including the muscles, tendons, joints and ligaments), along with a pain response that is much higher than what is considered normal. Fibromyalgia mainly targets the musculoskeletal system and is characterized by heightened pain response, the disorder can be triggered and co-exist with other physical and psychological complications. Fibromyalgia symptoms can also mimic the symptoms of other disorders and lead to incorrect diagnosis and treatment. There are several aspects that set fibromyalgia apart from other disorders. First, unlike other painful conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia doesn't lead to any long-term damage in the musculoskeletal system or the internal organs, and isn't marked by tissue inflammation. Also, while many other conditions can be deduced and diagnosed with the help of clinical tests and medical examination procedures, there is no specific test for fibromyalgia. The third characteristic concerns gender: females have a higher chance of suffering from fibromyalgia than men, specifically middle-aged women up to those in their mid-50s. Lastly, the causes of fibromyalgia are undetermined. The most commonly named possible causes are emotionally and physically stressful events, previous illnesses, increased sensitivity of the central nervous system, lack of sleep, and even genes. The wide range of possible causes makes fibromyalgia a controversial topic among practitioners and patients alike. Pain is the primary fibromyalgia symptom. A person who has fibromyalgia will feel intense pain in the "tender points" of the body: the neck, chest, shoulders, arms, upper back, hips, buttocks and knees – even the lightest pressure can lead to an increased amount of pain. Also included in the long list of fibromyalgia symptoms are lapses in concentration and memory; headaches; fatigue; light, temperature and noise sensitivity; and mood swings. Other medical disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, restless leg syndrome, anxiety, depression, pain during menstruation and urination, and intestinal problems can manifest in people who have fibromyalgia. The pain caused by fibromyalgia can be so debilitating that even the simplest everyday tasks can no longer be carried out. The popular (and ingrained) option is to go for medical treatment, but more people now realise that helping the body heal itself through natural means and with minimal medical intervention is a more viable solution. Natural therapies such as acupuncture will minimise the increased sensitivity and intense pain brought on by various fibromyalgia symptoms.
