Muscle Spasms

Muscle Spasms Graphic

In a system as complex as the human body, the slightest indication of a problem is of utmost importance. There are just too many possibilities, and occurrences like muscle spasms shouldn't be dismissed without much thought --- or used to arrive at immediate, uninformed conclusions. If you frequently experience muscle spasms, adequate knowledge about its causes and how it can be treated is required.

Muscle spasms are unintentional, sharp and painful contractions that can be felt in various parts of the body and lead to the hardening or bulging of the affected muscle(s). A distinction should be made between muscle spasms and muscle cramps. The former covers contractions that cease after a few moments, while the latter signifies sustained contractions and involves prolonged muscle hardening and increased pain, along with the inability to move the affected body part anywhere from a couple of hours to several days.

Muscle spasms have a broad range of causes. They usually happen because of dehydration and lack of electrolytes and minerals, and occur after extended physical activity or putting your body in uncomfortable positions for certain periods of time. Those who exercise without doing proper stretching, folks who engage in strenuous activity without any recuperation period, and people who have jobs that routinely require heavy lifting and irregular movement are most prone to muscle spasms.

Muscle spasms can also be an indicator of underlying medical problems. Conditions like anemia; atherosclerosis; diabetes; kidney, thyroid, metabolic and nervous system problems; and even alcoholism have been pinpointed as muscle spasm triggers. Some medications also bring about muscle spasms. People who frequently have muscle spams that aren't triggered by physical activity should consult with their doctor and eliminate all possible medical causes.

For some who experience muscle spasms, self-care can be sufficient. Stop moving the affected area, and massage it until the spasm subsides. You can then stretch the affected muscle gradually to help it relax. Also, any intense activity (such as sports and lifting of heavy objects) should be preceded by ample stretching. Moreover, drinking at least 1.5 litres of purified water per day and having a healthy diet will go a long way towards stopping muscle spasms.

But self-care doesn't work for many; they need assistance from osteopaths like Peter Reid. His 22 years of professional experience, extensive musculoskeletal knowledge, and use of different natural treatments will help balance muscle tone and give your aching muscles the relief they need!
