What is Pilates?

Pilates was developed by German born Joseph Pilates during the early 1900's where he used his method to rehabilitate bedridden injured soldiers.

It is an exercise Method designed to condition and connect the body and mind, correct muscle imbalances, improve posture and tone and strengthen the body.

How does Pilates work?

The primary focus of Pitates is to strengthen the area between the hips and the sternum. This involves engaging the deep abdominal and back muscles to promote strength and endurance. This develops core stability, with concentration on good pelvic and shoulder girdle control.

The emphasis is on a program of exercises performed in a balanced sequence. Most are repeated a small number of times. The emphasis once again is on quality of movement. A small number of well designed movements, properly performed in a structured sequence are worth hours of exhausting and forced, repetitive exercises.

Who can benefit from Pilates?

Everyone: It addresses the whole body and promotes balanced fitness and body awareness.
Athletes: Can have their programs designed to meet their specific needs and help to achieve their goals.
Business People: Find relief from stress through a therapeutic workout. It helps relieve back and neck complaints exacerbated by the office environment.
Those who are injured: Clients can maintain their physical condition and rehabilitate the injured area when appropriate.
Rheumatoid & Arthritic Complaints: These conditions can be assisted by maintaining mobility and joint support.
Pregnant Woman: Helps to maintain good strength and mobility as their posture changes.
From the ten year old to the elderly: This safe and effective exercise method can be adapted to suit all needs.

How do I get Started?

You start with an initial assessment. This is a ninety minute private session. Your medical history and exercise goals are taken into consideration as you are guided through a Pilates workout. Your physical condition wilt be assessed to enable an exercise programme to be designed to best suit your needs. After this, each session is by appointment and is one hour Long. You will be guided, monitored and progressed on an individual basis.

In the studio you will perform some exercises on the mat and some on the Pilates equipment. No more than three students per instructor is Pacific Pilates policy, ensuring careful monitoring of appropriate posture, breathing and movement. A critical element In the Pilates Method.
